Inspire : Insights #1

November 2023

Welcome 👋

It’s the first edition of our Inspire Learning newsletter! We're thrilled to embark on this monthly journey with you, bringing you the latest updates from across Scottish Borders schools, professional learning opportunities, and noteworthy stories from both near and far. As we delve into the world of teaching and learning enhanced by digital technology, our aim is to foster a sense of community and collaboration among educators dedicated to advancing education in our region. This newsletter is your go-to source for staying informed, connected and inspired.

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like 12 Days of Christmas 🎄

Strictly is on the telly, festive bakes are in Greggs and Michael Buble is thawing which can only mean one thing - Christmas 2023 is just around the corner. It also means our latest ‘12 Days of Christmas’ resource is nearly ready to launch!

This year the team have created a resource package aimed at…

  • ELC to Primary 3 pupils

  • Primary 4 to Primary 7 pupils

  • Secondary pupils

  • Enhanced Provision pupils

You can browse all the wonderful videos, instructions and creations right here on our 2023 ‘12 Days of Christmas’ ThingLink which includes making digital stained glass windows, charts and graphs on Numbers and a green screen Christmas jumper (and many, many more!)

You can also tune in to our live launch of this year’s resource on our YouTube channel - this takes place on Monday 4th December at 7pm or you can watch on-demand once the stream ends.

A Micro:Bit More Time To Apply 👾

You only have until 18th December to apply for the latest round of micro:bit devices for your primary school. Only one application may be submitted per school and deliveries will only be made to school addresses. The latest you will receive your BBC micro:bits will be March 2024 although you may receive it sooner. When your school pack has been sent out you will receive an e-mail advising of delivery.

To support these devices in the Scottish Borders, Helen Orde and Nicola Trafford have created a series of lessons to get started with micro:bit. These are available in a YouTube playlist here as well as creating lessons on Showbie which you can copy over to your class (please contact Helen, Nicola or your cluster support teacher for details on how to get access to the Showbie resources!)

There will also be the opportunity to learn more about micro:bit with Alison Heaton (primary science development officer) in the New Year at Knowepark and Duns Primary in January 2024 - see the poster below for more information as well as the other sessions being run.
